Ian has made a commitment to ‘sleep rough’ on 23 June 2016 to help raise funds for St Vincent de Paul’s services to support people in WA who are experiencing homelessness.
Some of the statistics on homelessness are quite sobering:
- There are an estimated 10,000 people who are homeless each night in WA and nationally 105,000 – 1 in every 200 Australians.
- 60% of homeless people are under 35 years old and 44% are women, which changed my view of who was affected by this issue.
- The most common reasons people give for becoming homeless relate to interpersonal conflict including domestic and family violence and relationship breakdown.
With too few accommodation options available the result is that many homeless people sleep rough on the streets each night, exposing them to a vastly increased risk of violence as well as triggering and exacerbating mental illness.
If you’d like to help Ian reach his ambitious $5,000 target, you can donate to his campaign page at: https://www.ceosleepout.org.au/ceos/wa-ceos/ian-sloan-dsbs/
Any contribution you can make, large or small, will be gratefully received and go towards the practical daily work of Vinnies in assisting a very vulnerable and growing group of Australians.
